About the Virginia-North Carolina Alliance
The Virginia-North Carolina Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation strives for diversification of the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) workforce, with an emphasis on increasing the number of underrepresented minority students earning baccalaureate degrees and matriculating to graduate school. Each of the twelve partner institution programs offers individually tailored recruitment, retention, and enhancement activities to support students such as bridge programs, stipends, symposia, tutoring, mentoring, workshops, and research experiences.

'ODU's Inaugural Early Engineering Experience for Minority Students
Congratulations to Danielle Carter, a junior majoring in electrical engineering at Old Dominion University's Batten College of Engineering and Technology, who devised and led the college's initial Early Engineering Experience (E3). E3 brought ten African American high school students from the Virginia Tech, Tidewater, and Richmond areas to ODU's campus for three days. Participants were assigned a student mentor, met current engineering students, and visited labs. This event would not have been possible without guidance from Dr. Rafael Landaeta, Associate Dean within the Batten College, and support from the VA–NC Alliance.
